Lenovo's Motorola Acquisition: What It Means for Global Electronics Sourcing

Chinese company Lenovo, which is one of the biggest personal computer manufacturer in the world, is expanding in the mobile phone field. Recently, it has taken over the Motorola smartphone unit.

Lenovo buys Motorola

Lenovo purchased Motorola Mobility from Google for $2.9 billion. The famous mobile phone maker Motorola at that time had the third position on the Android market in the USA and Latin America. Most importantly, the company has over two thousand patents and a large number of patent cross-license agreements.

The chairman of Lenovo, Yang Yuanqing, had assured the public that the company had a proven record of successfully embracing and strengthening world brands, such as IBM’s ThinkPad, and will properly handle its new assets. The whole deal doesn’t include Motorola’s research team, run by ex-president of DARPA, Regina Dugan.

Lenovo refused to comment on previous plans to manufacture Motorola smartphones in Texas.
